Welcome to Trini Vegan!
It is great to have you here! My name is Maria Borde and I’m an easy-going Trinidadian citizen who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In case you wonder…Yes, I do have an accent!
Just like most people, I grew up eating meat and dairy every single day.
At the age of 14, I had my first encounter with animal cruelty. My biology teacher at school, showed a very graphic video about chickens in a factory farm. The video highlighted the crude reality on how these precious little beings are tortured and killed for human consumption. I couldn’t watch the whole clip, I felt extremely sick.
I left the classroom in a hurry and angry at the teacher for showing that to the class. Of course, it wasn’t her fault or the video but my eyes started to open slowly with regards to how the meat I ate reached my plate.
Of course, I went home and declared boldly to my family that I will stop eating meat. Their reaction? Laughter and more laughter. You out of all people would stop eating meat? But you love it! And they were certainly right, I loved the taste of meat.
My desire to stop eating it lasted for about 8 hours. And then I returned to eating meat and dairy.
After a few years, I started experimenting with Vegetarianism. One of the first things I started noticing is that my energy levels increased dramatically. I was able to work more efficiently. I liked that and I thought this was something I needed to research further.
Then I decided to start educating myself about Veganism for a couple of years after finding out the inhumane treatment towards animals from the egg and dairy industry . I started reading blogs, watching clips and forced myself to watch documentaries such as “Earthlings” and “Forks Over Knives”. I learned that Veganism is not a diet, but a lifestyle.
It is my wish and purpose that I can help and inspire others. It is never too late, everyone can enjoy wonderful meals without having to hurt anyone.
Going Vegan is one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.
